what is the best method to record acoustic guitar?
i have a fingerpicking song that im recording.
is it best to record it through a microphone? (I have a Shure Beta57 A mic)
or is it best to record it through an interface? (My acoustic is acoustic-electric so i can plug in)?
also, if the song im doing for that gets harder and has a rockin’ drum beat, should i use fingerpicks? or my bare fingers?
I would get a large condenser mic, play around until it sounds not too basy or not to trebly. I got a mic that has different patterns. That is also helpful if you have room issues.
The Beta57 will not sound great if your playing a lot of bass tones, on the other hand it will reject the boomy-ness, which is a constant problem with recording acoustic guitars.
The sound you get by directly going into the computer will sound flat and almost like an electric. It is generally useless unless you are playing leads or if you just want to add a bit of thickness. I often add reverb to it and bring it in for ‘natural’ compression.
If you can’t get a good mic placement you could also send it through an amp and mic the amp. This can be handy if the guitar itself is not really high quality, and will reduce the the effect of squeaks and pick noise.
Some people get two mics and try to get a nice stereo sound. This can work unless you start bringing in other instruments. Typically then you want to EQ out the bottom end of the guitar and hope for the best.
Another way to get stereo sound is to delay the right or left channels by 9 ms or more. You can also just delay part of the signal, or delay it longer for the ‘U2-Coldplay’ rhythm guitar effects.
