I disagree slightly with ladydreamer’s answer regarding picks. Yes, they get lost, buy a whole bunch, but buy a few different types, different thicknesses, different shapes, etc. You don’t know what you like yet, this gives you the ability to experiment.

I’ve gone from pretty thin picks to medium to medium-heavy back down to what I think is medium (0.5 – 0.6 mm), from the rounded triangle to the tear-drop back to the rounded triangle, and found in the end that I really like picks with the rough texture on them so that you don’t drop them as easy (or like when your hands get all sweaty – stage lights can get pretty hot).

If you can swing the 30w amp it’ll sound better, but your setup sounds like its pretty good for a beginner, either way. You don’t need super-expensive cables (and for god’s sake not Monsters! remember, they’re overpriced and poorly constructed, lifetime warranty or no it won’t help you when its 10 o’clock at night and you’ve got a gig in two hours and your most important cable just died and oh yeah you can’t resolder the cable because its a god frickin da** monster cable….), you can actually get by just fine with less expensive cables. I’ve purchased a brand called… Rapco, I think, and Hosa as well too if I remember correctly. They’ve held up just fine and sound perfectly acceptable, even if they’re not in quite such sexy packaging.
