Piano Pedal Question?
My piano pedal (3rd one) broke before so my dad replaced it. After that, it seemed to me that the length of the notes when pressed were held for a much shorter period of time than before my pedal broke.
So today I opened up the bottom part of my piano and on top of the 3rd pedal on the inside, is some sort of a mechanism that lets you tighten the screw. So I tightened it (spun it about 10 times) and the pedal “seems” to prolong the notes. Does this actually do anything? Should I unspin it? I have to take RCM so my piano at home needs to be set correctly. Thanks.
You have the right idea about what to do, and this is a simple repair that you can do on your own.
If you can tell me the maker and model and year of your piano I can give more precise instructions as there is some variation in pedal mechanisms.
On most pianos the pedal rod screw simply attaches the pedal to the rod and doesn’t have a regulated height. there should be a a little pit on the backside of the pedal for the rod to sit in. make sure the rod is in there. at the other end there is usually a similar place to insert the other end of the pedal rod.
if the rod isn’t sitting in the right place the pedal won’t fully come back to it’s resting position and may leave the dampers too high resulting in the sustain lasting too long.
it’s also possible that the pedal bushing (most likely a little teflon tube, unless it’s an old piano in which case it will be felt) was not turned or replaced when your dad replaced the pedal. If the bushing is not there you can make a new one out of a 1/4 bushing felt.
if you have any uncertainty about doing this, or you make the problem worse you should call a piano technician. a service call to fix this should be less expensive than tuning your piano.
