Beethoven was taught piano and violin from his father and other local musicians at a very young age. He later played viola in an orchestra as a teenager in Bonn. We must assume that he was very good, but he was not necessarily known to be a virtuoso on these instruments as he was on the piano, as you mentioned.

It would have been very difficult for Beethoven to write his violin concerto and all those wonderful string quartets if he hadn’t been fairly proficient on the violin.
