Perhaps one of the most famous crossroads worldwide, Times Square in Manhattan, New York is an iconic world landmark that attracts millions of people across the world. This outstanding symbol of New York City was formerly known as the Longacre Square until the New York Times newspaper moved to the. Today, Times Square is a cultural center of music halls, theatres, and upscale hotels.
Over time, people have given Times Square a unique honor – they consider it the main location to assemble to await great events and celebrations together. This is perhaps most true when the New Year rings in each year in New York City. During the famous celebration of New Years Eve, the Waterford Crystal ball drop can be witnessed here every year. This tradition has been in place since 1907. This past year, when over two million people gathered here to ring in the New Year, they introduced a new, larger energy-efficient LED ball which will remain as a permanent attraction at the square to be used year-round on Valentine’s and Halloween day.
Times Square has also been the center for celebrations of Presidential results. The square has been associated with many great personalities like Charlie Chaplin, Irving Berlin, and Fred Astaire. The lights and advertising of the square make it a magnificent sight at night. It is perhaps the only neighborhood in the world that actually asks the building owners to display illuminated signs. The LED signs and the shopping are the soul of Times Square. The place is always kept in order around the clock by NYPD patrols.
The latest additions to Times Square include ABC’s Times Square Studios, Toys “R” Us, Hershey’s, and M&M’s stores. However it is the celebrated billboard signs of Times Square that have won it so much attention over the years. Some of these big names include Coca-Cola, TKTS Booth, Budweiser, One Astor Plaza, Virgin Megastores, Chevrolet clock, Virgin Megastores, The Hard Rock Cafe New York, and Planet Hollywood. Other corporations like Ernest & Young, Instinet, Corona Beer, Six Flags Inc., Bertelsmann, Barclays Capital, Conde Nast Publications, Morgan Stanley, and The New York Times Company have also made a significant mark.
Notably one of the busiest intersections in the world, the Times Square is home to one of the best collections of restaurants like the Ruby Foo’s, Cascina Ristorante, Mars 2112, Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse, Zanzibar, Trattoria Dopo Teatro, Frankie and Johnie’s, Lattanzi Restaurant, Langan’s Restaurant, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Planet Hollywood restaurant and bar, and Carmine’s. The square is also well-known for the major music fests like CMJ Fest, Central Park Summerstage, McCarren Park Pool Parties, River to River Festival, JVC Jazz Festival, Vision Festival XXI, and Siren Music Festival. In short, Times Square is a place that has it all!
