1. Open Chords. These chords utilize open strings and pressed notes near the nut and are commonly used by guitarist of all styles simply because they sound awesome. Master a few of them each week and get the chord changes to be smooth. They are not many so you should be able to learn them in a month and that will empower you to play quite a few pop tunes already.
2. It’s time now to work on your strumming hand and get some rhythms going, that will add some feel into your playing. Remember play on the beat till you get more confident with a down-stroke and, as you get more confident, start playing random strums on the up-beat using up-strokes. This technique – down-strokes on the down-beat and up-strokes on the up-beat – will help you keep your synch and the beat.
3. Learn a few tunes that make use of open chords and play with the CD. There are many songs in the pop/rock repertoire that fit this criterion. Find the CD and play-along. That is such a good exercise as you will be jamming with the professionals and will seriously learn a lot from it.
4. Increase your chord vocabulary by adding all the 7th & sus chords – Open Chords shapes – and learn a few tunes that use them.
5. It’s now time to practice fingerpicking. This technique is largely used by guitarists in balladish as well as up-tempo songs. This technique makes you use your right hand to pluck the strings instead of a plectrum and that has a very unique sound. Play a few at the beginning so that make yours the right technique, then once you are more comfortable try to ad lib your fingerpicking.
6. In the end start practicing more advances chords like F and, finally, the Barre Chords. The E & A shape Barre Chords might be a a little more challenging than the Open Chords but they are quite important as will enable you to play any chord – major or minor, sharp or flat – all over the neck of the guitar.
